A school management application built for low-cost private schools in Pakistan — attendance, fees, results and parent communication for schools that had never run software before. I led product design and development, then designed the sales strategy and built the field sales team that carried it: door-to-door acquisition on a commission structure, with the analytics to see which districts and which reps were working. Rolled out to more than 700 schools and 80,000 students across six districts of Punjab.

Founded a revenue-generating software unit inside an economics research institution. Built financially sustainable model, organizational capacity and trained a first-in-class software development team. Collaborated with research teams, private sector partners and international development organizations across projects in education, healthcare and COVID-19 response.
The schools and health workers these applications served did not have reliable connectivity. To serve them I built an offline-first stack in Elixir, React and TypeScript: an application keeps its state locally and stays fully editable with no connection, and once connectivity returns it syncs with the backend and across devices in the background, resolving conflicting edits as it goes.
The framework let our engineering team stand up new offline-first applications and build complex features across the stack without needing to fully understand how the distributed state underneath was managed. It is what let Labs produce the specialized engineering needed to reach the populations we were targeting, quickly and at scale.
Morocco Growth Diagnostic

Co-authored a growth diagnostic of Morocco that asked what prevented Morocco from achieving a growth 'miracle', despite solid performance on economic fundamentals. My work focused on climate and agricultural shocks, alongside stalled structural transformation and the low and falling participation of women in the labour force.
Bolivia Growth Diagnostic

Co-authored the Growth Lab's diagnostic of Bolivia, an eighteen-month engagement carried out during the country's foreign-exchange and fiscal crisis. The work traces the macroeconomic collapse to an erosion of the conditions for private investment rather than to an external shock: the 2006 hydrocarbons reversal and the decade-long decline in gas production that followed it, regulatory uncertainty in mining, and export permits and a transgenic seed ban in agriculture.
Published as a seven-paper series covering macroeconomics, energy, mining and lithium, agriculture and tourism, with a synthesis setting out reform priorities. I led the agriculture volume and contributed to the synthesis.
Bolivia: Agricultural Potential and Challenges

Lead author on the agriculture volume of the Bolivia series. Agricultural output has grown faster since 2000 than in any earlier period, but almost entirely through expansion of the area under cultivation rather than through yields — labour productivity is the lowest among regional peers, and continuing on the extensive margin implies further deforestation and the loss of market access that follows from it. The second constraint is the food-security framework, under which export permits are issued only once domestic demand is judged to be met, suppressing the supply response the policy was meant to secure.
The report argues for a region-specific approach that lets each of Bolivia's agro-ecological zones reach its own productive potential, and identifies the policy-created constraints — the transgenic seed ban, access to fertiliser and machinery, export restrictions — as those available for immediate reform.
Morocco Cities Interactive Report

A spatial-equilibrium reading of Morocco's cities, 2014–2024, published as an interactive report. We treat cities as labor markets, using functional urban areas estimated from satellite data from the GHSL rather than as administrative units. It tracks migration, wages, employment composition and economic complexity, and asks for each city whether growth is constrained more by labour demand or labour supply. Bilingual EN/FR.

A bot that improves conversations. Authored and presented a thesis on using AI as an agent-in-the-middle — not answering the human, but enriching what two humans are already saying to each other — and built a conversational framework on Watson services to test the idea.
The architecture was something I was proud of. Handlers, called minions, declare which other minions' outputs they need, so each message builds its own dependency graph that the scheduler resolves in order, handing every minion the accumulated enrichments rather than the raw text. Minions are generators that yield promises: a yield suspends until someone replies, so a multi-turn exchange reads as straight-line code and its state lives in the closure rather than a session store. The effect is that a complex plugin can be written as simple, linear code. Since a minion can declare new requirements mid-conversation, that graph is rebuilt as the exchange moves rather than fixed up front. The enrichments accumulate into a Neo4J knowledge graph.
Labor Regulations, Exports and Female Inclusion

The Growth Lab's Morocco diagnostic identified three binding constraints — weak export performance, micro-level distortions concentrated in labor regulation, and the exclusion of women from the economy. This paper asks whether they are one, tracing the impacts of the minimum wage and employment protection law through to the other two.
Green Ammonia: Capabilities and Workforce

In this paper we analyzed the labor market constraints that would threaten Morocco's green hydrogen strategy. I used Employer-employee matched records to generate a network of labor flows between industries, and then used graph algorithms to flag critical industries that cannot scale quickly.

An education platform addressing constraints on learning outcomes identified by the LEAPS research programme. Several components: a marketplace connecting low-cost private schools with education service providers, an emergency student learning portal built during COVID school closures, and a merge with MISchool's capabilities so the two could work together to mitigate learning losses.
Not every school would use a web application, so the marketplace also ran over the phone. An operator took the call, pulled the school up by its number, and edited its profile or placed an order on its behalf against the same catalogue, with the system messaging the school back over SMS — so a school needed nothing more than a phone to transact.
Mapping Food Insecurity in Karachi

Designed, led and won a competitive World Bank proposal to build an interactive dashboard mapping food-insecurity hotspots in Karachi's informal settlements. Produced rapidly for government officials in the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, then generalised to support a wide range of indicators across multiple cities and survey sources.

Conceived and led a public assessment quantifying the economic impact of COVID-19 and the lockdowns on households in Punjab. Brought principal investigators on board, secured the funding, and managed a multi-round survey on a random-digit-dial sample. Produced several publicly distributed reports and an interactive dashboard so the findings could be explored.
Hermosillo Growth Diagnostic

Co-authored a subnational growth diagnostic of Hermosillo, focused on the role of water as a binding constraint to growth. The work integrated spatial equilibrium into subnational diagnostics — treating a city's constraints as partly a function of its position relative to other places, rather than as internal properties alone.

This enables racial equity analysis for industrial policies. Used the research to analyse policies under consideration by the Mayor's office in Cleveland.
Global AEZ Yield Frontier

Characterizing yield performance at the country × agro-ecological zone level, built on FAO GAEZ pixel data. Country-AEZs are clustered based on their AEZ characteristics and revealed crop-choice mixtures. Individual crop yields are then benchmarked against the best performer in the cluster, and then aggregated to generate a comparable yield ratio metric indicating distance from potential yield.

A research agenda on bringing political economy into growth diagnostics, theoretically grounded and as data-driven as possible. Political settlement analysis is the foundational model: it incorporates the other canonical models in political science, and works at time scales practical for applied work. I developed a tool that collects indicators on political settlements, state capacity and political institutions to operationalize the model, and matches countries to institutional peers by distance on V-Dem.

A diagnostic of agricultural productivity in Pakistan, focusing on yield growth. The research identified poor yield performance as a central issue in Pakistani agriculture, and then develops two informative case studies - cotton, declining, and corn, on the rise - to tease out common underlying factors. It identifies seed quality as the main issue.
The report then asks what market failures have prevented the private sector from improving seed quality separately, and concludes by recommending public seed quality competitions held by the government to resolve information failures.
